In 2004, the RRBs earned a profit of Rs 934 crore as against Rs 734 crore the previous year.165 RRBs earned profit as against 156 in the previous year. 31 RRBs have made losses in 2004. Number of RRBs with accummulated loss is now down to 92 from 97 earlier.
The credit-deposit ratio went up from 44.23 in 2003 to 46.26 in 2004. The percentage of recovery was also increased from 71,5 to 73.52 during the period. The amount of loss was Rs 214 crore last year which fell to Rs 177 crore this year, according to a data released by All India Regional Rural Bank Employees Association (AIRRBEA).
RRBs, popularly known as Gramin Banks, were established on October 2, 1975 to meet the credit needs of the rural poor. At present 196 RRBs are working in 512 rural districts in all the states with 14,500 branches and 70,000 employees and officers.
