| 37% banks expect to deliver 10 to 25% of IT services over a cloud in the next two years.
Adoption of cloud computing across the Asia Pacific region, excluding Japan, will spike in 2010, according to IDC, with spending on IT cloud services growing almost threefold and reaching $42 billion by 2012 in Asia Pacific. India will play a significant role in this rapid cloud growth. Gartner expects that by 2012, 20% of businesses worldwide will own no IT assets and India-centric companies will represent 20% of the leading cloud aggregators globally.
According to Mr Anurag Khanna, CMD, Banknet Group , Financial institutions like banks and insurance companies usually have large data centres with masses of computing power, much of it under-utilised. The cloud is a solution which could provide greater increases in data centre utilisation, uptime, dynamic adaptability, agility and cost efficiency.
In a recent survey by BS&T/InformationWeek Analytics survey of 186 banking technology professionals, the top reason for considering cloud technology wasn’t to save money or to manage capacity. It was speed. “The ability to meet user demands quickly and achieve scale.”Majority of bankers are testing and researching cloud environments and are intensely interested in seeing what cloud concepts might accomplish for their IT organizations and the businesses they serve.
There are three basic flavors of clouds in use at banks -- internal clouds, external clouds and hybrids. Nineteen percent of the participants in the survey said they are developing or using an internal, or private, cloud network. More than a third of respondents (37%) expect to deliver 10 percent to 25 percent of IT services over a cloud over the next two years.
