Nation wide bank strike on February 25 & 26: Called Off

AN UPDATE (25th Feb 2008): In a good development, Indian bank unions called off planned two-day strike that was due to start today after they decided to hold discussions with the Indian Banks Association (IBA) to reach an understanding on March 3 to iron out their differences.

Indian Banks Association (IBA), all the nine bank unions under the aegis of united forum of bank unions (UFBU), comprising 10 lakh bank employees and officers, will go on a two-day country-wide strike on February 25 & 26. After the failure of the conciliatory meeting between Indian Banks Association (IBA) and union leaders the Banking operations in 55,000 bank branches are going to be paralysed on 25th & 26th February 2008.

The unions are opposed to mergers among public sector banks including associate banks, outsourcing and contractual employment. They have also sought one more opportunity to opt for pension schemes for those who did not opt earlier, besides compassionate recruitment.

According to All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) the bank managements want to outsource all the bank's services to provide temporary and casual jobs and reduce the recruitment of the permanent jobs.

Bank Unions plan to follow two-day strike by an indefinite strike from the last week of next month. Banking services across India were earlier affected on 25th January 2008, due to one-day strike of UFBU here
