State Bank of India now has the second largest branch network in the world


State Bank of India has become the second bank in the world to have more than 10,000 branches, after China’s ICBC

The State Bank of India opened its 10,000th branch on 9th March 2008 at Puduvayal a small town 85 km from Madurai (Tamilnadu).

SBI group had opened 1,000 branches this year. SBI plans to open at least 2,000 branches in rural India in the next two years.

Delhi-based Punjab National Bank (PNB) has the second largest network in India, with about 4,500 branches. Canara Bank, Bank of Baroda and Central Bank of India are the other banks with extensive branch networks in India.
