Banknet to organize Eco Panel to discuss "Towards greener banking & technologies" on 24th sept at Mumbai

Green banking means combining operational improvements and technology, and changing client habits. A 'green' bank is one that has adopted sustainability practices across all lines of the organization; the employees, facilities, products & services, and governance.

Banking sector is one of the major stake holders in the Industrial sector. Banks can play an indispensable role in mobilizing financial resources across the economy—in particular, providing capital for large-scale infrastructure and green technology deployment.

According to Mr Anurag Khanna, CMD, Banknet Group, banks need to go green and play a pro-active role in sustainable development and ensure that industries use appropriate technologies and sytems. Eco Panel at Banknet's 6th International Bank tech Summit on 24th September 2010 will provide as neutral platform for bankers & IT cos to come together & discuss "Towards greener banking & technologies".



As per a new study by PwC, Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) & The Climate Group “Seven out of the eight banks in the survey believe commercial lending banks in India can play a leadership role in the business community in addressing the challenges of climate change. They are starting to invest in low-carbon technologies and develop new products and services that will address the risks and opportunities of climate change,”

Many positive steps have been taken by banks in India over the past year & climate change is becoming an increasingly important issue. Some examples are- solar-powered ATMs, Formulating specific policies to consider the environmental issues associated with energy use, Setting up windmills, Providing end-to-end services for the commercialization of carbon credits, Green Home Loans, Engaging with the local communities through micro-events on eco related issues, Constituting Green Awards to recognize the efforts of companies in promoting greener economy, Mobilising Funds to invest in companies that meet global standards for environmental issues.

The Reserve Bank of India has already issued a notification on corporate social responsibility for banks with reference to the role of banks in sustainable development and non-financial reporting.
