Name : K Vishwanathan
Subject: Budget 2004 and Mutual Funds
Message : I am surprised that mutual funds, the most popular way of investments, worldwide are not given due importance by the Indian government.

1. The Budget has given the benefits of exemption for long-term capital gains and reduction of rates in short-term capital gains to 10% for gains in securities listed on a recognised stock exchange. But, Mutual funds have been excluded from the benefit.

2. Though, Equity oriented mutal funds will be exempt from tax on dividends but Debt-oriented MFs to be taxed.
