Reply :	Mergers take place because the merged entity can presumably take advantages of 'economies of scale', i.e. the decreased per unit cost of business associated with increased volumes of operations. That is generally believed to be true. However recent evidence abroad seems to suggest that beyond a certain size economies of scale do not operate.
