Weekend Getaways
NEAR MUMBAI:

i) Matheran
ii) Beaches

i) Matheran
Situated at an altitude of 800 mts., this picturesque hill station is the nearest to Mumbai, lying 104 km away. Getting there is half the fun! Linked to Mumbai by rail, a two-hour ride takes you to Neral from where you board a toy train, which meanders up the hill, offering breathtaking vistas along the route. There are plenty of sites to visit - Lake Charlotte, Honeymoon Hill, Panther's Cave, Hart Point and much more. It could be visited at any time of the year, including the monsoons, which have their own charm. A reason for the hill station still remaining so pristine is that no motor vehicle are permitted into the town making it the only resort accorded that privilege in the country. All vehicles halt at Dasturi Naka (3 km from Matheran). You could complete the remaining distance on horseback, rickshaw or by foot.

ii) Beaches Around Mumbai
North of Mumbai is a stretch of beaches comprising Marve, Madh, Aksha, Erangal, Manori and Gorai. Marve, Manori, Gorai are the nearby stretches of unspoiled beaches.Marve, a lesser-known beach is about 50 kms beyond Juhu beach. It has few private cottages dotted amongst the trees. Nearby is a scenic fishing village, an old Portuguese Church & a grove of cashewnut trees.

Manori located about 20 minutes away from Madh Island. Manori and the nearby Gorai are quaint hamlets that faintly remind one of Goa. The population of East Indians - a particular group of Catholics native to the Bombay area - is high in these villages which explains the high visibility of roadside chapels and churches and women in frocks.

There are row of holiday cottages. Manori Bell resort & The Dominique resort next door are good. Opt for a cottage near the sea. On weekends & holidays the cottages are generally booked.

By Air: Nearest airport is Mumbai 20 km.

By Rail: Nearest railway station is Malad, 12 km on the Chruchgate Virar suburban section of Western Railway.

By Road/Ferry: From Malad, there are BEST buses to Marve-Erangal-Aksa-Madh. Manori is across Marve creek and can be reached by motor launches. Country boats from Marve are also available. The best option is to take the ferry from Marve.A short ride on ferry which usually carry 20 to 30 passengers takes you to Manori. About a mile up the road and to the left finds you in Manori beach
There is an 'all road' connection via Bhayander, Godbhunder, Western Express Highway for those who wish to go with their own transport. However, two-wheelers can be transported on the ferry across the Marve Creek.
