Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is about managing your business to achieve both commercial and social benefit. In essence it’s about managing your social, community and environmental impacts to help you improve results, reduce risks and enhance your reputation.
It is also about growing your business in a way that has value for everyone connected to it. CSR is also referred as corporate conscience, corporate citizenship, social performance or sustainable responsible business.
CSR has been recognized by the big corporations today with acceleration on the global front. Large corporations serve as global providers; these corporations have progressively recognized the benefits of providing CSR programs in their various locations. CSR activities are now being undertaken throughout the globe.
The rationale for CSR has been articulated in a number of ways. In essence it is about building sustainable businesses, which need healthy economies, markets and communities. CSR is not about managing risk or reducing them, it’s about creating opportunities for corporate socially and generating improved sustainable profits for people.
The Ministry of Corporate Affairs of India has stated that the Companies Bill, 2009 should include mandatory provisions for large companies to ensure that every year at least 2% of its average net profits shall be spent on CSR activities as may be approved and specified by the company.
