The Credit Department
The branches of a bank can independently contract lending business only within the limit
allowed to the officer heading a particular branch. All requests for loans beyond this
amount are handled at the Head Office level or in the case of bigger banks at the next
higher level i.e. Regional Office, Zonal Offices, Local Head Offices etc. While actual
sanction is granted by the Officer/Committee/Board depending upon the magnitude of the
loan, the applications are appraised by a team of specialist officers organised into a
credit department or a variant of this name. Credit departments are normally manned by
qualified and experienced bankers, who have the skills to appraise the organisation,
working, efficiency and the management of the corporate seeking loan. They are aided and
assisted by the presence of various tools like market databases, bank's databases, credit
reports from the rating agencies etc. Credit departments are normally IT driven and use
the latest information available in the market. Variants of this department work under the
different authorities designated to sanction loans.
