Inspection
Departments
Most Banks have a network of branches which act as customer interface. Banks need to
strictly enforce the policies/guidelines of the Central Bank (RBI) and also ensure that
these branches function in an efficient and transparent manner. The systems and procedures
adopted by the bank also have to be uniformly applied across all branches. Banks,
therefore, employ the method of on-site inspection to enforce these objective. These
inspections are carried out by senior officers of the Bank under a well defined policy of
inspection. This policy normally lays down not only the frequency of inspection but also
the parameters and structure under which the Inspection department officials have to
function. The Inspection Department also ensures that irregularities observed during any
inspection are removed and necessary remedial measures, if any, initiated.
Depending on the size of the Bank, there may be more than one type of
Inspections/audits conducted in the branches. The Inspections carried out by Inspection
Department Officials are in addition to obligations of Statutory Inspection, if any.
