Indian Railway Budget 2015-2016 - Presented by Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu on 26th Feb 2015

The key themes of the Budget were in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiatives - Swachch Bharat Mission, Make in India and Digital India.

Railway Budget Highlights:

*No increase in railway passenger fares.
*Railway helpline number 138 will become operational 24×7
*A mobile application to address complaints of people
*'Operation 5 mins', wherein passengers travellling unreserved can purchase a ticket in 5 minutes.
*The facility of e-ticketing
*SMS alert services for passengers to inform them about arrival and departure of trains
*Modern facilities for disabled citizens, senior citizens, patients through IRCTC
*24 to 26 coaches in certain identified trains, more general class coaches, ladders to be replaced
* Rs 8.5 lakh crore will be invested in Railways in next 5 years
* Cleanliness in Railways highest priority under Swachh Rail Swachh Bharat
* Plans to building partnerships to gain long term financing and improve connectivity, modernise infrastructure
* Tickets can now be booked 120 days ahead of travel date, instead of 60 days now
* Introduction of integrated ticketing will be done, a Defence travel system has been developed to make travel easier
* Mobile application to address complaints of people is also being developed
* Surveillance cameras on select mainline and ladies compartments
* Bio toilets and airplane-type vaccum toilets in trains.
* 17000 more toilets to be replaced by bio-toilets
* Online booking for wheel chairs to be enabled
*In 400 stations wi-fi facility will be provided
* 67% more funds allotted for passenger amenities
* Satellite railway terminals in 10 major cities
* Rs 6,750 crore allocated for eliminating 3438 level crossings; 970 road-underbridge and road-overbridge to be constructed
* Investment 84% higher, 77 new projects
