As per the figures released by the Reserve Bank of India, the improvement in assets quality has been across banks. Standard assets for PSBs for the fiscal ended March 31, 2003, stands at 90.6 per cent of the total loan assets at Rs 52,3724 crore as against Rs 4,52,862 crore in the earlier fiscal. While sub-standard assets of PSBs have declined to 2.6 per cent of the total loan assets in the fiscal ended March 31, 2003, to Rs 14,909 (Rs 15,788 crore).

While for private banks standard assets have increased to 91.9 per cent at Rs 1,34,248 crore in the fiscal ended March 31, 2003, as against standard asserts of Rs 1,09,216 crore in the previous fiscal.

Doubtful assets of public sector banks (PSB) have reduced to Rs 32,340 in the year ended March 31, 2003, from Rs 33,658 crore in the year ended March 31, 2002. In case of private banks, doubtful assets have decreased to Rs 6,447 crore in the years ended March 31, 2003, from Rs 6,539 crore in the years ended March 31, 2002.

Sub-standard assets of private banks have declined to 2.9 per cent of the total loan assets at Rs 4,738 crore as against 3.9 per cent in the previous fiscal.

Scheduled commercial banks have also made a marked improvement in their performances with their standard assets being 91.2 per cent of the total loans assets in the fiscal ended March 31, 2003 as against 89.6 per cent in the previous fiscal.
